The 15th of August is a special day for the people of these islands because on this day new hope for the Maltese islands and for the Maltese people appeared. The Maltese people because of the war not only suffered death and great suffering with the bombs falling every day on Malta, but they were also in a very bad state and lacked everything necessary for daily life.
Food was very scarce, the fuel had run out and the little that was left was for the needs of the Nglizi services.
Malta was on the verge of giving up because all supplies had run out. Food was so scarce that anyone who had bread would buy it for a pound or more. On this day of the 15th of August 1942, the Maltese people went with their stones on the ramparts around the big port to give a welcome to those heroes who despite the continuous attacks they went through during the -the whole journey until they finally arrived in Malta. The entry of the tanker SS Ohio that day of August 15th on the Feast of Santa Maria, brought great joy among the people of Malta who managed to bring it to its final destination.
With this tanker, there were several other ships that were part of this convoy, but unfortunately they were sunk by the continuous attacks by the war planes of the Italian air force and the German Luftwaffe which they would attack them without stopping. But fortunately some other ships that were also part of this convoy managed to arrive and enter Malta on the 13th of August 1942 even though they had suffered major damages. These were the M V Port Chalmers, M V Melbourne Star, M V Rochester Castle.
A day after them, the M V Brisbane Star had also entered Malta port which had also suffered major damage. The Convoy of Santa Maria or rather Operation Pedestal as this convoy was officially known, had saved Malta from having to surrender because it brought to our country the necessary supplies so that the English could continue to fight the Nazi forces until Germany surrendered. Every year, a commemorative ceremony is held in Port il-Kbir to commemorate this historic event for the country and to pay respect to those heroes who gave their lives so that this convoy could be delivered to Malta.
This is just some information about what Malta went through during the Second World War and if you want more information you can find several books that have been published by Maltese publishers or by searching on the Internet where you can find everything that he wants
